DESCRIPTION

The Social Role of Garbage in Colonial Virginia
David Muraca, Director of Archaeology at The George Washington Foundation

Disgusting.  Gross. Odorific. All these words apply to the modern understanding of garbage. Colonial Virginians had fundamentally different ideas about their garbage habits and the role it played in everyday life. This talk will explore some of the aspects of colonial waste disposal and put these practices into a larger context that in turn may make modern persons question their own sense of normalcy.
