In the eighteenth century, our nation’s ﬁfth president, James Monroe, began his illustrious career practicing law in Fredericksburg. Today, the remarkable collection at the James Monroe Museum and Memorial Library includes the personal possessions, furnishings and papers of Monroe and his wife, Elizabeth. Many of the pieces were purchased while Monroe served as emissary to France.
