Raining and Pouring In The Fredericksburg Region
Don’t let a little ( or a lot! ) of rain stop you from enjoying the Fredericksburg region! From coffee shops, to escape rooms, to giant trampolines, the region is no slouch when it comes to rainy day fun. So grab your umbrella and boots and head on over!
When it rains good times, it pours!
Pop into a local museum– Is there any better time to causally stroll a museum then when it’s raining outside? If you’re in downtown, pop into the Fredericksburg Area Museum! Be sure to visit their website and the region Visitor Centers for details on upcoming events!
“FAM’s collection of objects span more than ten thousand years of history! Ranging from Native American artifacts to Black Lives Matter posters, the objects support the vast and rich stories of our community and offer insight into the lives of those that have paddled our river, walked our streets, worked our fields, run our businesses and government, attended our schools and churches, and participate in national movements.” -Fredericksburg Area Museum
“The John J. Wright Museum is dedicated to bringing the history of Spotsylvania County’s first African American high school alive.” – The John J Wright Museum
“More than a hundred years later, the story of Gari and Corinne Melchers lives on in their home, Belmont. Be a part of this story. Come and explore this unique historic home, tour stunning studio and art galleries, visit the restored gardens, shop in our museum store, and explore our trails. Share it with someone you love!” – Gari Melchers Home and Studio
Visit an art studio– When you finish up at the museum, pop open your umbrella and walk over to one of our many art studios!
Join a brewery tour- Fredericksburg has certainly made a name for itself in the Craft Beer world (link). You will want to stop by the visitor center for brewery tour details; we have a few options to choose from. Each offer transportation, tastings, and an informal tour at each stop.
Embrace the storm over coffee – Okay, hunkering down in a coffee shop ties with touring a museum as the #1 quintessential rainy day activity. The Fredericksburg region as many very different types of coffee shops to choose from. Check out out this article for an more in depth look. We suggest grabbing a book at Riverby Books first, or bringing your laptop.
Get tickets to a show at Riverside Dinner Theater– Depending on ticket sales and your schedule, this one may take a little more planning, but it would be totally worth it! Nearly 80 musicals and dramatic productions, as well as 120+ musical adaptations for children’s theater, have taken place at Riverside Theater.
- September 2018 – Beauty and the Beast
- December 2019 – A Rockabilly Christmas
- Spring 2019 – Aux Folles
Make your own art– If you are here on a rainy Thursday, drop in on a Wine and Design painting class, in Spotsylvania or Stafford! If you know in advance it’s going to rain when you’ll be in town, you can always book a class most days of the week. Wine and Paint places we love are:
- Wine and Design (they have many locations)
- Painting With A Twist
- Creative Art Studio
- When Pigs Fly – They offer classes with or without a bring-your-own adult beverage.
LibertyTown Arts Workshop, Deep Creek Vintage, Simply Beautiful Spaces, and PONSHOP Studio offer a variety of art classes for all levels, as well. If painting and drinking wine aren’t your thing, you will definitely find something you’ll love at any of these art studios!
Escape Rooms– If you can get a small group of people together, an escape room is such an awesome way to spend a rainy hour. If you’re unfamiliar with what one of these rooms are, here’s the breakdown:
“Players solve a series of puzzles and riddles using clues, hints, and strategy to complete the objectives at hand. Players are given a set time limit to unveil the secret plot which is hidden within the rooms. Escape rooms are inspired by “escape-the-room”–style video games. Games are set in a variety of fictional locations, such as prison cells, dungeons, and space stations, and usually the various puzzles and riddles themselves follow the theme of the room.”
Here are two local escape rooms we recommend:
Most of what we mentioned so far are activities for adults, or older kids. If you have young children, Fredericksburg is definitely a great place to get caught in the rain! We suggest letting your kids get their wiggles out in fun places like…
- Fort Pure Play – Your little one will love the chance for open-ended play with “sensory rich” materials. You will need to call and book time to play.
- Skyzone – Indoor trampoline park. Great for kids ages 2 and up.
- Central Park Fun-Land – Fun-Land has over 20 rides and attractions including laser tag, go-karts, miniature golf, batting cages, mini bowling, rock climbing and bumper cars. Fun-Land also has a massive arcade, with over 100 video and ticket & prize games!
- Chuck E Cheese– The classic never gets old!
- Splitsville or AMF Fredericksburg Lanes – We love bowling on a rainy day! Check out both locations for upcoming events and promotions!
