Fall "Fit-History" Hikes 2018
Fredericksburg & Spotsylvania National Military Park will once again combine health and history with a new series of “Fit-History” hikes this fall. These four ranger-led hikes are designed to cover a lot of ground in addition to a lot of history. This season’s hikes will cover two to three miles per hour. All hikes are on Saturdays and begin at 10 a.m.
September 15 Fredericksburg: Prospect Hill to Latimer’s Knoll (4 miles)
Join historian Avery Lentz to explore the strengths and weaknesses of the Confederate defense on the southern end of the Fredericksburg Battlefield.

September 29 Spotsylvania: The East Angle and Heth’s Salient (4 miles)
Walk off the beaten path with historian Justin Voithofer on the Spotsylvania Battlefield, and learn about the lesser known fighting to the east of the Bloody Angle.

October 13 Chancellorsville: Catharine’s Furnace to Fairview (4 miles)
Historian Maureen Lavelle will lead a hike from the industrial ruins of Catherine’s Furnace to the Union artillery position at Fairview, and discuss the devastation of farmlands and protection of cultural landscapes.

October 27 Chancellorsville History Trail (3.5 miles)
Take a hike on one of the park’s most popular trails with historian John Hennessy. Learn about the struggles of soldiers and civilians alike in the tangled wooded landscape.
Meet at the Chancellorsville Visitor Center, 9001 Plank Road, Spotsylvania, 22553.
When attending any of these Fit-History programs, please remember to wear sturdy shoes, bring plenty of water, and pack a snack. Bug spray and long pants are also suggested.
