In the mid 1800's Shiloh Baptist was sold to its all black congregation for a sum of $500. Over the years the church grew and had several name changes. Today there are several Shiloh Baptist churches in the Fredericksburg area. During the Civil War, the original Shiloh Church served as a hospital for Union soldiers.

Spotsylvania County Museum houses a collection of local artifacts and genealogical records. It is located in the Old Berea Church, dating back to 1856. Battle scars inflicted by the war still remain. Open year-round.

The district represents important historical periods in Spotsylvania County, from the building of the Spotswood Inn, 1838, through the Civil War, to serving as the present location of the Spotsylvania Government Center.

The masonry Jail that visitors see today was built in 1855 after the 1839 Jail, positioned closer to the Courthouse, burned in 1853.
