In the mid 1800's Shiloh Baptist was sold to its all black congregation for a sum of $500. Over the years the church grew and had several name changes. Today there are several Shiloh Baptist churches in the Fredericksburg area. During the Civil War, the original Shiloh Church served as a hospital for Union soldiers.

Spotswood Inn, ca. 1820, has been a school, post office, and tavern, as well as a popular inn. It served as military headquarters for General Jubal Early and as an observation point for General Robert E. Lee during the war. Restored.

Spotsylvania County Museum houses a collection of local artifacts and genealogical records. It is located in the Old Berea Church, dating back to 1856. Battle scars inflicted by the war still remain. Open year-round.

The court system of Spotsylvania was first established at Germanna in 1722; moved to Fredericksburg in 1732; to the "Old Courthouse" in 1778; and to its present site in 1839.

Scene of nearly two weeks of fighting, the Battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse reached a climax at the "Bloody Angle." For 20 hours on May 12, 1864, the Bloody Angle witnessed the most intense hand-to-hand combat of the war.
Historians man the exhibit shelters daily during the summer season and on weekends during much of the spring and fall season. On those days, historians also lead guided tours of the Bloody Angle at 1 and 4 pm.

The masonry Jail that visitors see today was built in 1855 after the 1839 Jail, positioned closer to the Courthouse, burned in 1853. This small Revolutionary-era house is a historic museum, open during Garden Week in April, the first week in October, and by appointment. Please allow 30 minutes for your visit. Built on land once owned by George Washington, the gambrel-roof house contains a fine collection of 18th century porcelains, glass, furniture and artwork.
